The End of Something New, Brings a First of Many

Tonight was Harry's first official Tiger Cub Meeting... you'd think that'd be enough excitement for one evening. Not a chance.

First, the meeting. Ever so slightly less chaotic than last week's first official Pack meeting (all of the new Tiger Cubs, the Cubs themselves, and several Webelos), luckily we were among the first to arrive, so I was able to get a few one-on-one questions answered with the Troop Leader. The boys all went outside for a game of Sharks & Minnows on the MacArthur front lawn, theoretically to tire them out a bit. I'd argue that it just got them warmed up, but I'm not in charge this time!

They came back in for a few discussions on various salutes, oaths, promises, and dictum associated with scouting in general, and a once-over of the uniform (which Harry was quick to offer that he already had all of those insignia badges in place, and eagerly volunteered to point them all out). Several other discussions about Den leaders, meetings, and how things are planned to go.

After all of that, the boys got restless again, and began an interesting variant of tag around the folded cafeteria tables. As the adults began to adjourn, the boys (thankfully) moved their game to the open area of the cafeteria, shortly after Ethan and Zack escorted a slightly bloodied, though quite calm Harry, back over to where Ainsley & I were waiting to be dismissed.

A quick visit to the boys room got him cleaned up, but also exposed a previously filled space in the middle of his lower jaw. I asked Harry if he knew his tooth was gone, to which he immediately grinned wide into the mirror, and said with a bit of astonishment... "NO!!??!!" To which I quickly followed up, "do you know where it is?" followed by the same answer.

It turns out, Harry's recently wobbly tooth had decided this was an opportune time to relieve itself of its attachment. As the boys were running around, the story remains a bit unclear, either Harry collided with Peter, or got tagged by Peter, at which point his tooth jumped out of his mouth, and somewhere onto the floor.

What better group effort to finish off the evening with, than for 20 of your buddies and new scout leaders squinting at the cafeteria floor, trying to find a lost tooth!

Full credit & Thanks to Denny Stillwagoner (Seth & Josh's dad) for actually finding it! So home we came, only for Harry to lament the loss the entire ride back. We discussed how cool a story he now has for how he lost his first tooth, and that unlike his favorite character Arthur, he certainly wouldn't be the last one in his class to have lost any baby teeth. He seemed OK with that.

So we got home and tried to settle down for bed. He seemed to have a little more fun brushing his remaining teeth tonight, and then off to bed, with the tooth in its handy holder, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Tooth Fairy.

Nothing like a day in the woods & fresh air...

So today we found ourselves outside with wonderful weather at the MD Renaissance festival, and Harry was climbing all up, down, across, and over the pirate ship in the kids area. He was off on his own for a bit, and when I went over to check on him, it bacame quite clear why things were so quiet...

As you can see, he and another boy were incredibly engrossed in a third's Nintendo DS. No idea what they were playing, but I doubt it mattered.

The Nation's Triathalon

Last night was Harry's first foray into Dragon Night with karate school. 3 hours of pizza, movies, and Karate.

This morning, we woke to the end of a steady rainthat came through, but Harry was adamant about us keeping our plan of riding downtown on his new REI Afterburner Trail-a-bike. Nothing like taking it out on the maiden spin, in the rain!

Looking back, I'm glad that we did. We met up with Mr Sullivan, and made our way up the trail, under bridges, past the airport, and finally over Memorial bridge.

We caught up with Ms Katherine, Ally, Maddy, and Ms Tara long enough to see Mr Kenny run by, and then headed home.

Harry did a great job helping pedal up the hills to get home, and didn't whine at all!

Can't wait for next time!

No offense Kenny, but Harry quickly decided spectating wasn't nearly as exciting if Kim wasn't running

First Grader!

Harry's so used to being at school, that yesterday's first day went off without a hitch. SO much so, that we seem to have just about overlooked it altogether!

No mystery ailments the night before, only subdued excitement... Harry and Kim had gone to the MacArthur open house last Friday to meet Harry's new teacher, and get a glimpse of his new classroom. Couple the report they both came home with, along with the consensus of neighbors who have either had the same teacher, or know someone who has, it sounds like we're in for another great year!

To paraphrase from one of the neighbors, "...you just need to be aware, you might be peaking a little early... you may not get a better teacher than this."

It's great to see him so excited about school, about his new teacher, about his new classroom, about his new classmates (oddly enough, with all of the new folks he's met over the summer, he only claims to already know 2 of his classmates), and all of the stuff this year will surely bring.

And it's quite contagious, as evidenced by Ainsley's love of her new environment at Abra... I think we can deal with that!
