2010 Tohko Family Camp

This year marked the McDermott family's return to East Madison NH for Family Camp up at Camp Tohkomeupog. For Harry's first foray into the wild, he had a pretty good week:
  • Made his own lunches
  • Shot a bow & arrow (with more hits than misses)
  • Learned to play ZimZam
  • Climbed 2815' Mt Willard and made it back down without incident
  • Jumped in a lake by several methods: off the diving board, off a floating platform, off the 6' riser on said platform, off the 12' riser on said platform, and off a floating trampoline
  • Taught himself (and a few friends) how to stand-up paddle on the lake
  • Canoed
  • Tie-dyed
  • Shot a BB Gun at the riflery range
  • Learned to build a campfire
  • Played ping-pong
  • Played volleyball
  • Did a rope swing
  • Had breakfast and dinner on the beach (on separate occasions)
It was quite a week for sure... Ainsley even got in on some of the fun, participating in the mountain hike, the waterfront activities (she'll tell you, SHE went off the diving board too!), and even a shot at tie-dying.

Somehow, I think we'll be back again next year.

What's a phone book?

Even without the assistance of an actual phone book offered to improve his view, Harry had an awesome time watching "Bugs Bunny at the Symphony" at Wolf Trap. I think he may have appreciated the music in and of itself, but the added cartoons kept him intrigued. Great intro to the symphony. Sad about leaving at intermission (at 9:45!).

It's a tie!

I was just laughing about how ridiculous the requirements for first grade are.
Count to 50.
Write and recognize your name.

There's a whole list.
Know opposites.
Up from down.
Left from right.
Ainsley knows these!
Tie shoes
.
Pause.
Well, do you think other people are sitting at home laughing at this one! Guess we made the cut, and with 4 weeks to spare!
