Harry's World v2

It's - wait for it - AWESOME!

Harry finally got his light saber. The blue Obi-Wan Kenobi one. Harry had to eat dinner (by eat I mean try) every night for 7 nights in a row without crying and complaining. It took awhile. But the light saber lights up and makes REAL light saber noises. Unfortunately, he has sensitive ears (I did too) and he doesn't liek teh sounds. Darn for me! He still LOVES the light saber though. Apparently it's all he talked about at school today - that I was buying one at lunch.
Also at school today they played musical chairs. Harry came in 3rd. Miles won. He's a head taller. Taryn was 2nd...and Harry digs her.

What a difference a day makes

Harry and I were sidekicks on our downtown adventure to explore DC while Mommy and Aunt Meghan ran the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday.

He watched out the front window of the Metro train as we sped into the city from home, meeting a few other kids on the way who were also going to watch parents in the race.

We trekked across Memorial Bridge to our first spot just below the Lincoln Memorial

But we were a little early, so we decided to check out President Lincoln, since Harry had just seen his picture in a magazine... lots of steps

And then... the big guy

Back to the race, and watching for Mommy & Aunt Meg. Unfortunately, Daddy's math isn't as good as it used to be, so we only caught Mommy on the course once...

Back towards the finish to catch up with everyone, even Miles!

It was quite a day. I think Harry even had fun hanging out with me (that's not necessarily a given, certainly lately).

However today was a different vibe altogether... though let me stress through no fault of Harry's.

Everyone was still tired this morning from Sunday's travels... on foot, by train, by cab, you name it, we covered a bunch, and in massive quantities! So no one really wanted to get up, save for little sister... which meant everyone was up early, for an early departure, so we could get Aunt Meg to the airport on time, get A to school on time, get H to school on time, and ultimately get Daddy to work on time.

Then Bailey decided it was as good a time as any to make things a little more exciting. As she is wont to do, whenever any kind of bag/satchel/container/etc is left within her reach (or even without), she gets overly inquisitive, so much so that tasting things becomes a really good idea... so good in fact that things that would normally be far beyond her reach, even locked up, would really hit the spot.

So several prescription & OTC medications later, Bailey once again found herself cowering in the backyard, a victim of induced vomiting. As also tends to happen, the repercussions always seem to last longer than anyone expects, and some kind of floor covering once again found itself very evident of Bailey's previous presence.

One very late meeting, soiled carpet & couch, crying hungry baby, and scared little boy (from watching some show upstairs that had evil-doers changing people's hair color with some kind of wand-esque thing) later, we all had quite the Monday today. Throughout it all, Harry remained quite cooperative, much more so than had been the case in the previous week... so it's still looking pretty good for that light saber... we'll see.

off we go!

Let's see if I get this right:

Do you know why I'm friends with R.? Because when I was a (L)izard and I was new to
Abra, he came up to me and said "Hi, I'm R." And I said "Hi, I'm Harry."

Had a great day off today with Harry. Hit the pumpkin patch and were the second to last ones to leave. TWO hay (straw) rides, 81 alpine slides, 3 pumpkins, lots of kids in orange. Very different this year, since Harry was friends with everyone and no longer shy. Same for me, actually!

After, we stopped at the libray, where the librarian asked if she could help. "I need new Richard Scary books to replace the one I'v e been forced to read every night for the last two months." She jumped up before I finished my sentence. I couldn't have asked for more sympathy!

Dreamery was closed so we got some Dibs from 7-11. Harry watched Fr(o)ggles until it was time to pick up Ainsley. Later, I videotaped him saying hello in Japanese, reciting the days of the week in English, counting in Spanish, singing the Greek alphabet, cheering the Temple fight song and holding his breath under water. Good times!

New richard scarry!

In follow up to my previous post....

When I got to scool today Ms. Theresa told me with a smile, Harry told us a story today. About asparagus! I burst out laughing!

Smelly pee is great motivating factor for 4 year olds!

Harry ate almost all of his asparagus last night. Why? Because we told him it woudl turn his pee bright green and make it smell funny. We didn't even have to invent this one.
Srangely enough, he was also foaming at teh mouth for more orange pepper slices. No go for the Kiwi Meat Pies though (that's kiwikuisine.com, not Kiwi fruit).

Cuddle Time

I love to cuddle with Harry before his bedtime and read stories...except for the reading out loud part. I just don't like to read aloud. But I like to cuddle. And squish his nose.

Big Gheorghe's Shoe

Harry was nervous the other night about giants. Luckily, Daddy knows a couple...and he even has a couple of their shoes. Harry was scared of them. He thought the giants might return for them. It's been a couple of days and Harry has mellowed. He does want Daddy to take Big Gheorghe's shoe to Abra to show his class.

I HATE BEING SICK!!!!

I normally do lots of things with my kids during the week. Since at least last Friday I have been too ill to do anything. I hate it! I want to go back to providing a fun, active life for them. Especially while the weather is great. I hate this.

Self Helper

Yesterday I was too sick to teach Harry how to draw flowers, and Kevin was giving Ainsley a bath, so Harry, on his own, used a how to draw book to teach himself how to draw flowers. They're good too! Except they are drawn on white paper with a very light crayon. He even used white crayon for one of the masterpieces. He wants me to frame it. I drew the line.

Sugar!

In one of my last posts, I talked about shopping with Harry at the local market, and how fun it is. I swear, it's like a children's "please touch" museum. Kevin complains about the cost of buying organic, but it's worth it, especially when you have the opportunity to discuss making good food choices and why. The boy who eats nothing will tell us when he "ate some protein" for lunch. He knows what protein is and why you need it. Well, he's not ready to give a lecture on it, and "why" may be an exaggeration, but he knows it is important. He's gone into convenience stores and stated "there's nothing but sugar here!"
Now, he's not warped or anything. He's told people at parties "I'm not allowed to have soda" or "My mommy says I can't chew gum" which is partially true but not wholly. We don't have those things at home (for him), but he has tried soda (sprite) and hated it. Too bubbly. We've even encouraged gum chewing, but he doesn't want it. He also doesn't want sugar cereal. The Today Show will lead you to believe it's epidemic. Everyone has a sweet tooth. Kids won't eat cereal without sugar. Now, Harry is a picky eater, and he does like his cupcakes, but we've never loaded him up on junk. Junk makes kids cranky and unruly. Organic, sugar-free cereals come with pictures of Puffins and Gorillas and even Clifford. And they taste good. If he's happy with an organic fruit bar, why push a candy bar down his throat? He eats candy, but 1 piece at a time. I'll sometimes promise him multiple lollipops, but he gets bored before eating too much. Last week we bought low fat bran muffins and cupcakes. He didn't have a single cupcake. He refused. He wanted the muffins.
So, my point is not that he's a freak, and not that he eats perfectly, and not that he'd ever consider eating a salad, but kids can make better choices if those are theoptions they are given.
